The Art of Minding Your Own Business

Let People Enjoy What They Love

People seem to have an opinion about almost everything others do: the books they read, the music they listen to, the clothes they wear, what they post, and even the interests they develop.

Somehow, we’ve become quick to assume that someone enjoying these things is looking for attention, trying to impress others, or creating an image of themselves.

Maybe they’re enjoying their lives.

People can love what they do and want to share a little of that happiness with others. A picture doesn’t always have a hidden purpose, and enjoying something doesn’t mean someone is trying to impress anyone.

Of course, some people do things for attention. That doesn’t give us a reason to question everyone’s intentions. We don’t always know what’s going on in someone else’s mind.

Before judging someone else, take a moment to look at your own reaction. Ask yourself whether their behavior is harming you or anyone else, or whether you’re uncomfortable with how they choose to live. It’s worth considering whether your own thinking needs to change.

We should learn to look at ourselves before criticizing others. We can dislike something without it being wrong, and we don’t have to criticize everything we don’t understand.

It’s strange how much time we can spend questioning whether other people are being genuine while rarely examining our own actions.

Perhaps we should spend less time deciding what others are trying to prove and more time understanding why we feel the need to judge them.

Let people enjoy what they love without expecting them to explain themselves or seek your approval.
